Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov took questions from Indian journalists in New Delhi during a special online briefing organised by Sputnik India.
The briefing was moderated by Olga Dycheva, Chief Representative in India, Sputnik News.
The event came ahead of the upcoming BRICS summit, where leaders are expected to discuss major issues concerning the global economy, security and cooperation among member states.
Peskov praised India’s role as the chair of BRICS and said Moscow believes the summit will be a success. He described BRICS as a platform based on mutual trust, respect, and cooperation rather than an alliance directed against any country.
He highlighted several areas of cooperation within the grouping, including security, technology, artificial intelligence, healthcare, energy, transportation, and food security. Peskov also pointed to Russia’s proposal for a BRICS grain exchange as an initiative aimed at contributing to global food stability.
India-Russia Strategic Partnership
Putin will take part in all formats of the BRICS Summit in India, alongside a key bilateral meeting with Modi, Peskov said.

He noted that the two leaders share extremely close personal ties, describing their relationship as practical and sincere, allowing them to discuss even the most sensitive issues on the global agenda and bilateral relations openly and constructively.
Peskov described India as a key strategic partner for Russia and emphasized cooperation in energy, nuclear power, defence, space, and education.
Russia continues to work with India on nuclear energy projects, including the expansion of cooperation around the Kudankulam nuclear power plant.

Defence cooperation continues to be one of the central pillars of the India-Russia strategic partnership, with Peskov describing the relationship as a long-standing and deeply rooted collaboration.
Highlighting joint defence projects, Peskov pointed to the BrahMos missile programme as an example of advanced cooperation between the two countries.

He said the possibility of supplying Su-57s to India remains under discussion, with India seeking access to production technologies.
BRICS and Shift Toward National Currencies
A major topic discussed during the briefing was the growing use of national currencies in trade between Russia and BRICS countries.
Peskov said Russia has increasingly moved away from relying on Western financial systems, with around 90 percent of Russian transactions with BRICS partners now being conducted in national currencies.
