India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has congratulated Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tarique Rahman on his party’s victory in the country’s parliamentary elections.
"Warm congratulations to Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley on her historic third consecutive electoral victory. India deeply values its long-standing friendship with Barbados, which continues to expand across diverse areas of cooperation," Modi wrote on the social media platform X.
He added that India would continue to support a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh.
"I warmly recall our meeting on the sidelines of the India-CARICOM Summit in 2024 and look forward to working closely with her to further strengthen our partnership for the benefit of our peoples," the Indian leader said.
Tarique Rahman is the son of former Bangladeshi prime minister Khaleda Zia, who died in December last year after a long illness. Rahman had lived in voluntary exile in London since 2008, after leaving Bangladesh amid numerous criminal charges, including money laundering, as well as accusations linked to an alleged plot to assassinate the then prime minister, Sheikh Hasina.
Rahman returned to Bangladesh on 25 December last year, ending more than 17 years of self-imposed exile in the United Kingdom.
