US President Donald Trump has said he recently received some "pretty good news" regarding the Middle East and Iran, but declined to provide details.
“We had some pretty good news 20 minutes ago, but it seems to be going very well in the Middle East with Iran,” he told reporters.
The US president did not specify what the news was, but added that negotiations were planned for the weekend.
Trump also said he would hold a press conference on Saturday morning, Washington local time, which he said was not directly related to Iran.
“I expect things to go well,” the president said.
On 28 February, the US and Israel launched strikes on targets in Iran, including in Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties. Iran responded by striking Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East.
On 7 April, Washington and Tehran announced a two-week ceasefire. Subsequent talks in Islamabad ended without agreement. While no resumption of hostilities was announced, the US began a blockade of Iranian ports. Mediators are trying to organise a new round of negotiations.
