China places great importance on cooperation within BRICS, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said at a briefing on Thursday.
A meeting of BRICS foreign ministers is being held in New Delhi on May 14-15. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is among the participants.
"China attaches great importance to cooperation within BRICS, actively participates in it, and has always sought to deepen the BRICS strategic partnership," Guo said.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was not attending the meeting due to scheduling reasons, the diplomat noted.
BRICS is an interstate association established in 2006 by Russia, China, India, and Brazil, with South Africa joining in 2011. Several additional countries joined BRICS at the beginning of 2024. India holds the BRICS presidency in 2026.
