The UK Defense Ministry announced a contract worth approximately 1 billion pounds ($1.35 billion) for the purchase of new RCH155 self-propelled howitzers to replace the AS-90 artillery systems transferred to Ukraine.
"Seventy-two Remote Controlled Howitzers (RCH 155) will be procured under a nearly £1 billion contract, which includes initial training and in-service support ... The RCH 155 replaces the AS90 artillery systems granted in kind to Ukraine in 2023," the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
Rheinmetall's Telford and KNDS plants in Stockport will be involved in production, the statement read, adding that the first deliveries of the new RCH155 howitzers are expected in 2028.
