Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) officials confirmed during the state visit of President To Lam to Delhi this month that India is in talks with Vietnam to sell BrahMos missiles.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh began his two-day visit to Vietnam to bolster military cooperation, industrial partnerships and maritime collaboration between India and Vietnam. Singh will hold talks with Vietnam’s Minister of National Defence General Phan Van Giang in Hanoi.
Singh’s visit marks the first high-level engagement between the two countries since the elevation of ties to the level of Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership announced during the state visit of Vietnamese President To Lam to India this month.
During the visit, BrahMos Aerospace CEO Dr. Jaiteerth Joshi also met the Vietnamese President, according to pictures shared by the Indo-Russian company last week.
Explaining Vietnam’s interest in BrahMos missiles, Commodore (retd) Seshadri Vasan, Director General, Chennai Centre for China Studies (C3S), said that “defence and security cooperation between the two countries is becoming a “strategic pillar of relations”, as noted by President Lam this month.
Vasan said that, ASEAN nations were looking to shore up their deterrence and increase their leverage in ongoing talks around the South China Sea.

“This is where the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile comes in. It is a war-proven missile, with the air variant used to carry out precision strikes at Nur Khan and Rahimyar Khan airbases during Operation Sindoor.

Pakistan’s air-defence systems, including Chinese HQ-9/P and LY-80s, were unable to intercept BrahMos, which has also bolstered the Indo-Russian missile’s market value,” the thinktank chief said.

Besides its stealth and pinpoint accuracy, BrahMos has also shown its prowess in terms of adaptive trajectory and self-guiding abilities. Moreover, it’s adaptable and flexible in terms of deployment, allowing a degree of customisation suited to individual security needs of the purchasing country, said Vasan.
“The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile is unparalleled in its segment, be it speed, stealth or accuracy. The DRDO is just trying to add more range and flexibility as well as dynamism to the product. It is already successfully integrated into the land, ship, air and submarine-based platforms of the Indian armed forces, making it a tried and tested missile,” explained Vasan.
He noted that Vietnam, much like the Philippines, has reportedly expressed an interest in procuring a Shore Based Anti-Ship Missile System. The Philippines was BrahMos missile’s first overseas customer in 2022. This year, Reuters reported that Indonesia has also finalised a deal for the supersonic cruise missile with India.

Vasan said that Vietnam may also be keeping an eye on the upcoming BrahMos-NG variant, which may be integrated with its own Sukhoi-30 fighter jets. India has already offered Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) support to Vietnam’s Su-30 fleet.
