MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The issue of uranium enrichment is still on the agenda of US-Iran peace talks, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Friday.
"There's been some slight progress ... The fundamentals remain the same. Iran can never have a nuclear weapon, it just cannot. This regime can never have nuclear weapons, and to achieve that, we are going to have to address the issue of enrichment. We are going to have to address the issue of the highly enriched uranium," Rubio said at the NATO Foreign Ministers' meeting in Sweden.
Washington is awaiting updates from the ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran, Rubio said but stressed that "the fundamentals remain the same: Iran can never have a nuclear weapon."
On May 15, US President Donald Trump said that he would be satisfied with Iran suspending uranium enrichment for 20 years. In response, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said that Tehran has no intention of giving up the rights afforded under the NPT. The United States aims to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions, whereas Tehran insists on first receiving peace guarantees before it is prepared to engage in discussions on its nuclear program.
