India, Vietnam Sign Deal on BrahMos Missile Sales
India and Vietnam have signed a deal that allows for the sale of cruise missiles produced by an Indo-Russian joint venture, BrahMos Aerospace, Indian Deputy Defense Minister Rajesh Kumar Singh said on Saturday.
"For Vietnam, I understand that it [the agreement] has already been signed, probably not publicly announced, but already signed," Singh said at the Shangri-La Dialogue security forum in Singapore.
The Indian official described Vietnam as a friendly country with whom India is ready to share advanced technologies. The list of such countries is scrutinized by the Indian Defense Ministry together with the External Affairs Ministry, as no country will sell weapons to an adversary or to someone who might pass them on to an adversary, he added.
"India has strong commitment to the ASEAN nations, and we treat all of you as friendly countries with whom we can share advanced defense technologies," the minister said.
BrahMos Aerospace is an Indo-Russian joint venture that produces supersonic cruise missiles that can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or land-based platforms.
Singapore has been hosting the Shangri-La Dialogue forum since Friday. The three-day event is billed as Asia's key defense summit that brings officials together to debate the region's most pressing security challenges.
