Vietnam wants to deploy BrahMos missiles to strengthen the security of its maritime borders, sources told Sputnik India.The missiles to be exported to Vietnam would be used against enemy warships. The deal is expected to include missile firing units, command and control systems, radars and other support vehicles.The Indian Navy has operated anti-ship variants of the BrahMos missile for nearly two decades, with almost all of its frontline warships currently equipped with the system.The President of Vietnam, accompanied by an official delegation, visited India from May 5 to May 7. India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh subsequently traveled to Vietnam on May 18 for a two-day official visit.The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile is jointly developed by India and Russia. It is operated by all three branches of the Indian military — the Army, Navy and Air Force. Its original strike range of 290 km has now been extended to around 800 km.If approved, this would become the second export order for BrahMos and also India’s second major defence export deal. India previously signed its first BrahMos export agreement with the Philippines in 2021 in a deal of similar value.BrahMos missiles played a major role during last year’s India-Pakistan conflict in May. During the clashes, the Indian Air Force used air-launched BrahMos missiles mounted on Su-30 fighter jets against Pakistani military and terrorist targets with high accuracy, sources also noted.Following this conflict, many countries around the world have expressed interest in the BrahMos missile.
