Russian Small Modular Reactors to Boost Africa’s Electricity: African Energy Chamber
18:35 04.06.2026 (Updated: 15:36 05.06.2026) The deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs) from Russia could provide substantial benefits to African countries facing electricity shortages, NJ Ayuk, the executive chairman of the African Energy Chamber, said on Thursday.
"The ability to use SMRs from Russia to really drive the base load capacity for electricity will give a lot," Ayuk said during the Russia-Africa session at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
Millions of people in Africa lack access to clean energy technologies, many of them women, making the issue partly one of human rights, he added.
The 2026 SPIEF is taking place from June 3-6. RIA Novosti is the general information partner of the forum.
