African Nations Actively Confirming Participation in Russia-Africa Summit
Russia is actively receiving confirmation from African countries regarding their participation in the Russia-Africa summit, Tatiana Dovgalenko, director of the Department for Partnership with Africa at the Russian Foreign Ministry, told Sputnik.
The third Russia-Africa Summit will take place in Moscow on October 28-29.
"All countries of the continent and regional integration associations are invited — the African Union, of course, as well as regional economic communities in the subregions. Pan-African structures have been invited. We are actively receiving confirmations [of participation]," Dovgalenko said on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
Russia expects a large and substantial presence of African countries at the summit, and this interest is mutual, as African partners also have great interest in cooperation with Russia, the official said.
"There is great interest because, as you can see, crises are multiplying around the world, turbulence is not subsiding, and it is unlikely to subside in the near future. All of this underscores the need to diversify partners," she said.
In partnership with Russia, African countries expect to gain digital, technological, and energy sovereignty, Dovgalenko added.
"If in the mid-20th century the Soviet Union actively helped African countries in their national liberation struggles and the establishment of statehood — that is, in gaining political sovereignty — now they are counting, among other things, on active cooperation with us in achieving economic, technological, digital, and energy sovereignty," she said.
