Sanctions against Russia have worsened Germany's catastrophic deindustrialisation, Steffen Kotre, a Bundestag member from the right-wing opposition party Alternative for Germany (AfD), told Sputnik.
The lawmaker believes German companies would do business with Russia again if they could, but due to pressure from the United States, they are not doing so.
"However, we see the consequences of this policy, and they are quite serious. On the one hand, we have a flawed energy transition, which is driving up energy prices. On the other hand, the cessation of supplies from Russia, which have always been relatively inexpensive, also leads to higher energy prices," Kotre said on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
The consequence, he said, is deindustrialisation.

"Since 2018, we have lost about 15 percent of industrial production. This is a catastrophic trend — deindustrialisation caused by high energy prices," he emphasised.

Kotre added that other factors also played a role, but sanctions were further exacerbating the situation, causing German companies to suffer significant losses.
