Russia to Back Bangladesh's BRICS Bid After Pause on Membership Expansion Ends: FM Lavrov
Russia will support Bangladesh's bid to join BRICS once the pause on the group's expansion is lifted, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Monday.
Speaking during a joint appearance with Bangladesh Foreign Minister Touhid Hossain Rahman, Lavrov acknowledged Bangladesh's growing engagement with BRICS institutions and highlighted its participation in the New Development Bank (NDB).
"Our position regarding Bangladesh's candidacy is that once this pause is over, we will look favorably on the candidacy of this large and important Asian country," Lavrov said in response to a Sputnik India question.
Bangladesh's BRICS Ambitions
Bangladesh first expressed
interest in joining BRICS in 2023 and has since become a shareholder in the New Development Bank, the financial institution established by BRICS nations to support infrastructure and sustainable development projects.
Responding to a question about Bangladesh's potential accession to the grouping, Lavrov said many countries are interested in joining BRICS because of the opportunities and benefits it offers.
"We fully understand the aspirations of contenders, including our friends from Bangladesh," Lavrov said.
He noted that Bangladesh has been satisfied with its participation in the New Development Bank and has played an active role within the institution.
