India Sees Strong Potential to Expand Textile Trade With Russia
19:02 11.06.2026 (Updated: 17:15 12.06.2026) India is looking to deepen its textile partnership with Russia as both countries explore new areas of commercial cooperation in the sector, Indian Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles Pabitra Margherita said in an exclusive interview with Sputnik India.
Margherita said India and Russia share a deeply rooted relationship that extends across multiple sectors, including textiles.
"Russia and India are traditional friends. Our relationship is deeply rooted, and we have strong cooperation in every sector, including textiles," Margherita told Sputnik India.
The minister’s remarks came in response to a question on India’s growing presence in Russia’s textile market. More than 300 Russian stakeholders attended Bharat Tex last year, while Margherita also visited Moscow, where he inaugurated the India Apparel Textile Fair and engaged with representatives of Russia’s textile industry.
"There is immense potential to explore new avenues of cooperation in the textile industry. Indian exporters and producers, along with their Russian counterparts, are eager to expand this partnership," Margherita said.
India’s share in Russia’s textile imports has been rising, but the country currently ranks ninth in the Russian textile market, behind China, Uzbekistan, Turkey and Italy.
Margherita said the Indian government and the Ministry of Textiles are working to create a proper platform where buyers and sellers from both sides can interact directly and strengthen business ties.
India expects stronger business outcomes in the sector in the coming years, similar to the progress already seen in other areas of the India-Russia partnership, he summed up.
