Germany and Poland will provide their infrastructure for moving troops eastward in the event of a military conflict, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on Wednesday.
"Germany and Poland are NATO's logistical hubs. In the event of a defense necessity, hundreds of thousands of allied soldiers will be moved through our countries to the east – both to Poland and to the Baltic states," Wadephul said at the German-Polish forum.
Germany and Poland form the backbone of European defense and NATO deterrence, he said. In this regard, the minister stressed the importance of updating the defense agreement between the two countries.
"It [agreement] opens up potential to deepen our cooperation in the defense industry, as should be the case between close neighbors and alliance allies. And it binds us even closer together in joint exercises, especially in the Baltic Sea region," Wadephul added.
In recent years, Russia has repeatedly expressed concern over unprecedented NATO activity near its western borders. The Kremlin has noted that Russia does not pose a threat to anyone but will not ignore actions potentially dangerous to its interests.
