The European Union can hardly become a negotiator in the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict due to its tactic towards Russia, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday.
"The Europeans flaunt their principles and say that they can only talk to Russia from a position of strength. They have now reiterated this. The European Union held some summit. They suddenly claim to be an intermediary, but at the same time they themselves present ultimatums, as was the case following the meeting between [UK Prime Minister Keir] Starmer, [German Chancellor Friedrich] Merz and [French President Emmanuel] Macron with [Vladimir] Zelensky in London ... And I don't know how they try to present themselves as negotiators," Lavrov said at a joint press conference after a meeting with Madagascar Foreign Minister Alice N'Diaye.
At Thursday's EU summit, it was decided to extend anti-Russian sanctions not for six months, as it has been done so far, but for a year, the foreign minister added.
"Apparently, this is an additional signal that Europe is now seriously taking on Russia," Lavrov said.
The EU's actions represent a very strange tactic, it can be called anything but normal politics and normal diplomacy, the Russian foreign minister said.
