Prime Minister Narendra Modi has commissioned three indigenously built naval platforms — INS Agray, INS Dunagiri and INS Sanshodhak — at a ceremony in Kolkata, describing the occasion as a major milestone in strengthening India's maritime security and advancing self-reliance in defence manufacturing, Hindusthan Samachar said on Sunday.
Addressing the Tri Commissioning ceremony, Modi said the induction of the three vessels demonstrated India's growing ability to design, build and deploy advanced defence platforms using indigenous technology. He said the move would further enhance the Indian Navy's operational readiness while reinforcing the country's strategic interests in the Indian Ocean Region.
The Prime Minister stressed that maritime strength is vital to safeguarding national security, securing sea lanes and promoting regional stability. He added that a modern, capable Navy is essential to protecting India's coastline, trade routes and wider maritime interests amid evolving security challenges.
Highlighting the government's "Atmanirbhar Bharat" initiative, Modi said domestic defence production has reduced reliance on foreign suppliers while creating opportunities for Indian industry, innovation and skilled employment. He added that India's shipbuilding sector has made significant progress in recent years, enabling the production of advanced naval platforms that meet global standards.
INS Agray is a modern warship designed to strengthen the Navy's combat capabilities. INS Dunagiri is a stealth frigate equipped with advanced weapons and surveillance systems for multi-role maritime operations, while INS Sanshodhak is a state-of-the-art survey vessel that will enhance the Navy's hydrographic capabilities through seabed mapping, navigation surveys and maritime data collection.
The ceremony was attended by senior naval officers, defence officials and government representatives. The induction of the three vessels is expected to strengthen the Indian Navy's capabilities across combat, surveillance and hydrographic missions.
The commissioning formed part of Modi's visit to Kolkata, where he earlier led national celebrations marking the 12th International Day of Yoga before attending the naval ceremony.
