More than 70% of Colombian soldiers responsible for mass killings in the country in the 2000s were trained in the United States or by American instructors, retired Colombian police colonel Omar Rojas told Sputnik.
Under President Alvaro Uribe, the Colombian army killed thousands of civilians to pass them off as guerrilla fighters to receive bonuses and promotions. This practice became known as "false positives" (falsos positivos).
"I conducted research on extrajudicial executions under the Uribe government. I managed to interview 50 military personnel involved in the 'false positives' practice. Of them, over 70% had been trained at the School of the Americas or by US instructors," the former officer said.
The School of the Americas (SOA) was established by the US in 1946 in the Panama Canal Zone to train Latin American security forces. It was moved to US territory in 1984 and transformed into the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC) in 2001 after media reports emerged linking its graduates to gross human rights violations.
