Nearly 40% of residents in Germany and France oppose Turkey's accession to the European Union, according to a Public First survey conducted for Politico.
In France, 41% of respondents said Turkey should never become an EU member, while only 9% believe Ankara should be granted immediate membership. A further 11% said Turkey should join but not within the next decade, 27% declined to answer, and 12% said Turkey should join within the next 10 years.
In Germany, 39% oppose Turkish EU membership, while 10% support immediate accession. Another 19% said Turkey should join within the next decade, 16% said membership should happen but not within 10 years, and 16% were undecided.
The poll was conducted from June 14-17 among 2,000 respondents, with a margin of error of two percentage points.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has stated that EU membership remains a strategic priority for Ankara, and that advancing the negotiation process serves the interests of both Turkey and the bloc. Turkey signed an association agreement with the EU in 1963, and the Customs Union came into effect in 1996 as a step toward full membership.
