Speaking at the inauguration of the restoration project, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised Indonesian President Subianto Prabowo that he would visit Indonesia again before 2029 once the conservation works at the Java temple complex were completed.
Prime Minister Modi and President Prabowo on Wednesday jointly inaugurated the conservation and restoration project for the Prambanan Temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site dedicated to Hindu god Lord Shiva and having shrines of other gods and goddesses as well.
The India-supported project is being carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which has a successful track record of carrying out restoration works at archaeological sites across Southeast Asia. ASI also undertook extensive documentation of the Borobodur Temple Compounds in Indonesia, a press release by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.
The conservation project follows the understanding reached between the two leaders during President Prabowo’s visit to India last year.

Addressing the event with Probowo in Yogyakarta, PM Modi noted that the temple has been the "second-biggest identity" of Indian heritage in Southeast Asia and a symbol of "shared civilisational heritage" between India and Indonesia.

The ninth century Prambanan temple complex is the biggest Shiva temple in the Indonesia and the second-biggest Hindu temple in Southeast Asia, after Cambodia's Angkor Wat.
The Prime Minister said he had offered prayers at the temple and compared its prestige to the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage, the annual Hindu pilgrimage to China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

Modi expressed hope that Indian tourists travelling to Indonesia would make a stopover in Yogyakarta to pay a visit to the Javanese temple complex.

Addressing a joint sitting of the Indonesian Parliament on Tuesday, Modi told the lawmakers that India and Indonesia have a shared history rooted in Ramayana and Mahabharatam, while noting the Hindu landmarks such as Prambanan. In his speech, the Indian PM also described "civilisational connect" as one of the five pillars marking a "new era" in India-Indonesia relations.
The Indian Prime Minister is on a three-day visit to the Southeast Asian country and has departed for Melbourne from Yogyakarta for the second leg of his three-nation visit.
Among other major outcomes from PM Modi's visit, the two sides signed MoUs for cooperation on BrahMos Missile System and an Air-to-Air Missile Cooperation Agreement. Indian officials said that India would supply BrahMos cruise missile system and ASTRA Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missiles to Indonesia.
