The United States conducts annual strategic missile test launches from nuclear submarines while criticizing China's missile launch, which is a typical example of double standards, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said on Thursday.
“They [the US] conduct strategic missile launches from nuclear submarines every year, and at the same time they make irresponsible statements and criticize China's normal missile launch. This is a typical example of double standards and hegemonism,” Mao said at a briefing.
When asked about the US State Department statement that Beijing had allegedly notified Washington too late of the test launch and failed to provide sufficient details, the spokeswoman said that China had promptly released relevant information and had notified the US and other countries in advance.
Mao also commented on the statements made during the recent NATO summit in Ankara concerning China-related security issues, saying that "NATO should abandon the outdated Cold War mentality, adjust its perception of China and stop hyping the so-called 'China threat' narrative."
She also pointed out that the US is the only country in the world to have used nuclear weapons and it is also the owner of the world's most advanced nuclear arsenal, while China "has always been a power that promotes peace, has never threatened any country and does not pose any threat to the security of the Euro-Atlantic region."
China's Defense Ministry has previously said that the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy successfully conducted a test submarine launch of a strategic missile with a simulated warhead into the Pacific Ocean on July 6.
