Indonesia to Buy India’s Astra and BrahMos Missiles
India will sell Brahmos and ASTRA missiles to Indonesia, the Indian government told Sputnik.
Indonesia signed a deal to buy Astra and Bramos missiles from India
"Recognising that India and Indonesia are maritime neighbours and strategic partners with robust defence cooperation, both leaders reaffirmed their strong commitment to further enhance and broaden the defence and maritime partnership," Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said in a statement.
Defence analysts, the deal sends a quiet but
powerful signal to the world.
The Astra is a fully Indian-made
beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile built by the
Defence Research and Development Organisation."That such a home-grown weapon is now wanted by Indonesia tells developing nations one simple thing: India makes serious, modern arms, and it is ready to share them," said military commentator Girish Linganna.
For countries that cannot afford US or or other western weapons. the Astra costs around one million dollars per missile which is nearly half the price of the US AIM-120 AMRAAM missile, he explained.
The Astra is the lightest missile in its class at 154 kg, it flies at Mach 4.5 and is highly manoeuvrable, able to make 40g turns even at low altitude.
Another advantage of the Astra is that it is already compatible with the Indonesian Air Force's Russian-made Sukhoi Su-30 jet fighters with no costly adaptations needed.
"It shows India can offer ready solutions that match what a buyer already owns," Linganna said. "Our missile also runs on our own seeker and software, so it comes without foreign locks or hidden conditions."
"Step by step, India is shedding its old image of a big importer and earning a new one as a reliable, affordable, and self-reliant arms partner for the developing world," Linganna reckoned.
Retired group captain Uttam Kumar Devnath stressed that the Astra emits no radar signal at launch, giving the enemy little warning.
India is developing the Astra Mark 2 with an extended range of 250 km, while the planned Astra Mark 3 will reach 350 km.
