Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former Emir of Qatar, who ruled the state for 18 years and is the father of the country's current emir, died on Sunday at the age of 74, the Qatari emir's office said.
"With hearts steadfast in faith in God's decree and destiny, the Amiri Diwan [chancellery] mourns the great loss to the nation of the late—may God have mercy on him—His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who passed away this morning … at the age of nearly 74 years," the office said on X.
Al Thani was considered the founder of modern Qatar and continued to enjoy influence and love in the country even after handing over power to his son.
