According to India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the negotiations made substantial progress during eight rounds of virtual technical discussions held between New Delhi and Malé from June 29 to July 7.India's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Maldives' Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed reviewed the outcome of the negotiations on Tuesday.India is currently the Maldives' second-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade continuing to grow.According to official figures, trade between the two countries increased by 13.54%, rising from $679.70 million in the 2024–25 fiscal year to $771.76 million in 2025–26.The proposed FTA is expected to deepen economic cooperation by improving market access, facilitating investment, and expanding bilateral trade.Officials from both countries said the agreement is also intended to support sustainable economic growth while further strengthening the longstanding partnership between India and the Maldives.

India and the Maldives have successfully concluded the first round of negotiations for a proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA), marking a significant step toward strengthening bilateral economic ties.
According to India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the negotiations made substantial progress during eight rounds of virtual technical discussions held between New Delhi and Malé from June 29 to July 7.
India's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Maldives' Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed reviewed the outcome of the negotiations on Tuesday.
Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to concluding the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) at the earliest opportunity as the two countries mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
