Russian Crude Critical Pillar of India's Energy Security: Oil Specialist

India's Russian oil imports broke all records in July, hitting 2.8 million barrels per day (mbd), taking the Eurasian country's share in the South Asian nation's energy basket to over 55%.
India's record intake of Russian crude in July reflected a clear economic decision by refiners rather than a structural shift away from US oil.
"The primary driver has been the significant margin on Russian Urals crude, which creates a compelling cost advantage for Indian refiners. These economics became even more attractive as refiners sought to maximise throughput and capitalise on strong refined product export opportunities across Asia," Arpit Chandna, an energy specialist with the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), told Sputnik India.
Crude quality also plays an important role. Russian Urals is a medium sour grade that mixes well with the configuration of India's complex refining system, enabling refineries to efficiently process Russian barrels while maintaining strong product yields, he added.
By comparison, US crude grades are generally lighter and sweeter, and often arrive at a higher landed cost once freight and logistics are considered, the commodities commentator underscored.

"Geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East further reinforced the appeal of Russian supplies. However, if the price benefits on Russian oil continue to narrow, the economic incentive behind these record import levels could diminish, potentially leading to a more diversified crude import mix going forward for India," Chandna stressed.
Russian crude has become a critical pillar of India's energy security, particularly at a time when geopolitical risk around both the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab are raising concerns over global oil flows. Beyond offering pricing advantages, Russian barrels provide diversification away from traditional Middle Eastern supply routes, he stated.
If Russian oil shipments were disrupted, India would face higher procurement costs, tighter refining margins, and increased reliance on alternative supplies from the Middle East, the US, and Latin America. Such a shift could increase exposure to freight disruptions, inflationary pressures, and volatility in both domestic fuel markets and the broader economy, the market pundit summed up.
