The Arctic is becoming increasingly important to India’s long-term foreign economic strategy, including energy security and future industrial cooperation with Russia, Sri Viswanathan, Vice Chairman of the Chennai Port Authority, said on Friday.
"For India, the Arctic… is no longer a peripheral region. It is becoming increasingly important for our long-term foreign economic strategy, including in the areas of energy security, future industrial cooperation, and sustainable maritime security," Viswanathan said during a session at the 4th Arctic Regions Forum.
He noted that Russia has extensive experience working in the Arctic, and India is currently one of the fastest-growing markets in the world. According to the official, these factors could serve as an advantage for economic cooperation between the countries.
"Ensuring transport accessibility is India's top priority in strengthening economic cooperation with Russia. As I've already said, this is no longer measured by distance. It will be measured by sustainability, reliability, and commercial viability," emphasized the deputy chairman of the port authority.
