Like the National Stock Exchange (NSE), India plans to set up a Coal Exchange, where the commodity will be traded like the shares of listed companies on the country's bourses, according to Vikram Dev Dutt, the nation's Coal Secretary. He added that the establishment of the coal exchange would create a conducive environment, providing buyers and sellers with a transparent marketplace to conduct trade, which would ultimately lead to the formation of a national coal derivatives market. Also, this platform could ease the concerns of buyers, especially when electricity demand surges, and they have to make short-term or unplanned coal purchases, he concluded.

India Plans to Establish Coal Trading Exchange
India is the world's second-largest producer of coal, producing more than 1 billion tonnes of the fossil fuel annually.
Like the National Stock Exchange (NSE), India plans to set up a Coal Exchange, where the commodity will be traded like the shares of listed companies on the country's bourses, according to Vikram Dev Dutt, the nation's Coal Secretary.
"Coal demand is projected to rise further to an estimated 1.6 billion tonnes by 2030, and under this situation, where the country has moved from a scarcity scenario to a surplus scenario, a shift that underscores the need for more efficient, transparent and market-driven mechanisms for coal trade," Dutt said during his address at the Global Commodity Conclave 2026 in Mumbai on Friday.
He added that the establishment of the coal exchange would create a conducive environment, providing buyers and sellers with a transparent marketplace to conduct trade, which would ultimately lead to the formation of a national coal derivatives market.
"Coal exchanges will also allow the exchange to function as a central counterparty for clearing and settlement, thereby improving risk management for both buyers and sellers," the secretary stressed.
"This will also lay the foundation for the development of a coal derivatives market in India at the right point of time," Dutt underscored.
Also, this platform could
ease the concerns of buyers, especially when electricity demand surges, and they have to make short-term or unplanned coal purchases, he concluded.
