Iran Seeks to Accelerate Infrastructure Projects with Russia
Iran intends to accelerate the implementation of joint infrastructure projects with Russia once the regional situation stabilizes, Iran’s ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, said in an interview with Sputnik.
In mid-March, amid the conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said that some joint projects with Russia could face a temporary pause. Moscow and Tehran later reaffirmed their commitment to moving forward with the initiatives. Although active hostilities between Iran and the United States have subsided, the broader conflict remains unresolved.
“Under the current circumstances, contacts between the two sides are continuing, and our goal is not to halt joint projects but to accelerate their implementation once the situation stabilizes. Work on the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, for example, is continuing,” Jalali said.
According to the ambassador, Iran and Russia are currently holding talks and taking practical steps on a range of infrastructure and economic initiatives.
One of the most significant projects is the Rasht–Astara railway, a key section of the International North–South Transport Corridor. Jalali said the two countries had reached an agreement on a contract for the project and were preparing to sign it.
The railway is considered an important link in efforts to improve transport connectivity between Russia, Iran and markets further south, while strengthening the role of the North–South corridor as an alternative trade route.
The two countries have also discussed expanding cooperation in the energy sector. Talks have included the possible transportation of Russian gas to Iran as well as the infrastructure required to support such supplies.
Both sides have indicated that existing projects will continue where possible, with a broader acceleration expected once regional conditions become more stable.
