Russia is set to roll out its central bank digital currency (CBDC), the digital ruble, into public circulation starting September 1, with more than 130 Russian banks preparing to integrate the system.
From that date, major retail chains will be required to accept payments in digital rubles. Specifically, large retailers with annual revenue exceeding 120 million rubles must begin accepting digital ruble payments from September.
According to the CBDC Tracker, only three countries so far, Jamaica, the Bahamas, and Kazakhstan, have fully launched a central bank digital currency, putting Russia among a small group of nations moving to complete rollout.
Russia is also in talks with foreign partners regarding the digital ruble's international use. The currency is being launched in a way designed to bypass the SWIFT payment system and reduce dependence on the US dollar.
If that international rollout gains traction, the digital ruble could become one of Russia's most significant tools yet for sidestepping Western financial infrastructure
