European Nations Paint Russia as Enemy to Justify Higher Taxes: Kremlin
European countries are "building their own defense identity" after losing the cheap US security umbrella, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
"After losing the very cheap US security umbrella, Europeans are now building their own defense identity. This costs a lot of taxpayer money, he added," Peskov told Vesti correspondent Pavel Zarubin.
European governments frame Russia as an enemy to excuse unpopular tax increases and ballooning defense spending, the spokesman further stated.
"Voters don't like this. How to convince voters? Create an enemy. Which enemy is the most convincing? A big enemy, a large, powerful one," Peskov explained.
