Earlier in the day, the US Central Command said that US forces had destroyed five Iranian tankers. Iranian forces later said they had attacked two US destroyers as well as the US base at Al-Azraq in Jordan. The ministry also condemned the US strikes on Iranian tankers and stated that attacks on Iranian commercial vessels in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman are a continuation of the US's military aggression, naval blockade and "economic war" against Iran, and a violation of the UN Charter and international law.In response to Washington's strikes, Tehran used its inherent right to self-defense by attacking US military facilities and bases in Jordan that are used for US attacks on Iran, the ministry said. Tehran will continue to resolutely respond to any aggression, it added. On February 28, the US and Israel began striking targets in Iran, to which the Iranian side responded with strikes of its own. In mid-June, Tehran and Washington signed a memorandum aimed at a cessation of hostilities, but shortly afterward, they exchanged strikes again. The conflict remains unresolved, with sporadic resumptions of hostilities. Washington has, however, chosen to increase its economic pressure against the Islamic Republic in a push to end the conflict through the creation of additional financial hardships for Tehran.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Calls US Attacks on Ships Dangerous Escalation of Tensions
The United States' attacks on Iranian ships represent a dangerous escalation of tensions, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, the US Central Command said that US forces had destroyed five Iranian tankers. Iranian forces later said they had attacked two US destroyers as well as the US base at Al-Azraq in Jordan.
"The aggressive actions of the US against Iranian commercial vessels are not only a dangerous escalation of tensions in the region but also a threat to international and regional security and peace," the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry also condemned the US strikes on Iranian tankers and stated that attacks on Iranian commercial vessels in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman are a continuation of the US's military aggression, naval blockade and "economic war" against Iran, and a violation of the UN Charter and international law.
In response to Washington's strikes, Tehran used its inherent right to self-defense by attacking US military facilities and bases in Jordan that are used for US attacks on Iran, the ministry said.
