US Pushed BRICS Toward De-Dollarisation With Russia Sanctions: Kremlin
The US itself pushed BRICS to abandon the dollar by banning Russia from using it in settlements, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Saturday.
"The United States is trying to use the global reserve currency, the US dollar, as an instrument of political pressure. They simply banned Russia from using the US dollar. And Russia used this reserve currency as a payment instrument in international trade. Now that we have been deprived of this right, Russia said: 'We have our own currency,'" Peskov told the RT broadcaster.
Many countries support this trend, he said.
"Is this because we wanted it? No, we had to do it. And now that we have done it, we realized that such a system is much more effective. Did this arise as a BRICS initiative against the US dollar? No. It is because the US made a mistake," the spokesman added.
