Cuba came to the BRICS Summit in New Delhi not as a member, but as a partner country, with a message it has been repeating for decades: smaller nations of the Global South need to work together. Speaking to Sputnik, Carlos Luis Jorge Mendez put it simply: Cuba has argued for a multipolar world "for many years," and sees the Summit as another platform to make that case."We are a very small country in the Caribbean, but we have a very big soul," he said, describing Cuba's approach as bringing its own experience in cooperation and solidarity to the table, with the goal of helping Global South economies integrate for the benefit of their people.Asked whether Cuba might pursue full BRICS membership, Mendez didn't rule it out. "Why not?" he said, not necessarily now, but potentially down the road, in a way he believes could benefit both Cuba and the bloc.Mendez said the US blockade continues to inflict its heaviest costs on ordinary Cubans, worsening shortages of electricity, water and food, while Washington pressures other countries to limit ties with Havana. Despite the pressure, Cuba is opening its economy to foreign investment without compromising its political system or principles. Havana sees BRICS as a strategic avenue to expand trade, explore alternative payment mechanisms and reduce the impact of US sanctions, including through greater use of local currencies.
