India, Brazil Discuss Expanding MERCOSUR Trade Pact and Investment Ties
India and Brazil have discussed expanding the India-MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement and strengthening bilateral trade and investment ties, Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said.
Goyal held talks with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and Minister of Development, Industry, Trade and Services Márcio Elias Rosa on the sidelines of the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The gathering is being held on September 30 and October 1.
“Discussed expanding the India-MERCOSUR PTA, strengthening cooperation across sectors and investment ties, and enhancing coordination at the G20 and WTO,” Goyal said following the meeting.
MERCOSUR is the South American trade bloc that includes Brazil, and both countries have been working toward broadening the existing preferential trade framework. Earlier official India-Brazil discussions reviewed progress on the terms of reference for expanding the agreement.
Economic ties between the two BRICS partners have also been growing. Bilateral trade reached $15.07 billion in 2025–26, while both sides have set a goal of raising it to $30 billion by 2030, with pharmaceuticals, chemicals, engineering goods and machinery among the priority sectors.
