India Urges G20 to Protect Policy Independence of Developing Economies
India has called on G20 members to protect the policy independence of developing economies and support a fair, transparent and rules-based global trading system, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said at the G20 Trade Ministers’ meeting.
Goyal stressed the importance of consensus-based decision-making and said developing countries need sufficient policy space to support the development and livelihoods of their populations.
“Maintaining special and differential treatment is essential to enable developing countries to catch up with developed economies,” Goyal said, while also calling for the restoration of the two-tier dispute settlement system.
The minister highlighted India’s position as the world’s fastest-growing large economy, driven by domestic demand and serving a population of 1.4 billion. He said India was also strengthening global supply chains by developing manufacturing value chains from design to finished goods.
Goyal added that India’s trade with G20 members depends on a transparent, non-discriminatory and rules-based trading system.
