India's Adani Power and Bhutan's state-owned Druk Green Power Corp Limited (DGPC) signed a shareholders' pact to develop the 770 MW Chamkharchhu-I Hydroelectric Project in central Bhutan, a statement by Indian entity said.
The signing ceremony of the proposed run-of-river project was attended by Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, the country's finance and energy minister as well as representatives from Druk Power and Adani Power among others.
The project will be developed in 49:51 equity partnership, with Druk Power owning the majority stakes, the statement read, adding that it will be developed within six years of the ground-breaking ceremony. Construction is expected to commence in the first half of 2027, it added.
The company said that the hydel utility project will come up in central Bhutan's Zhemgang District on the Chamkarchhu River.
The project cements Adani Power's position in Bhutan's hydel power generation market. Last September, Druk and Adani signed a pact to 570 MW Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project, part of the larger 5,000 MW hydropower development MoU signed between the Adani Group and Druk in 2025.
"This partnership marks another significant milestone in Bhutan’s hydropower development journey and further strengthens the long-standing energy partnership between Bhutan and India. The 770 MW Chamkharchhu-I Hydropower Project will contribute to strengthening Bhutan’s energy security, particularly during the winter months, while creating opportunities to optimise and export surplus clean energy to India," Adani Power's Managing Director Anil Sardana said.
Hydropower cooperation is a key pillar of India-Bhutan ties, governed by a 2006 bilateral pact and a protocol signed in 2009, according to India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Indian entities are backing four hydro-electric projects in Bhutan, having a combined capacity of 2,136 MW, which are already supplying electricity to India through a cross-border grid.
