The reactor has reached the minimum controllable power level (MCP), confirming that start-up was successful and a self-sustaining, controlled nuclear chain reaction is underway in its core, according to Rosatom. He added that, following the successful completion of this phase, the unit would be ready for power start-up and subsequent connection to Bangladesh’s electricity grid. Rosatom expects this to happen by the end of November. The company said all operations were carried out in accordance with design requirements and the start-up programme, under the supervision of specialists from the operating organisation, the general designer, the regulatory body and the Kurchatov Institute, the project’s scientific director.Rosatom highlighted the plant’s role in strengthening Bangladesh’s energy security, developing national infrastructure and providing a reliable source of low-carbon electricity. It also credited the progress to the coordinated work of Russian and Bangladeshi specialists.Located around 160 kilometres from Dhaka, Rooppur is Bangladesh’s first nuclear power plant. It is being built using a Russian design and will feature two VVER-1200 reactors with a combined capacity of 2,400 megawatts.

Rooppur Nuclear Plant in Bangladesh Achieves Self-Sustaining Nuclear Reaction: Rosatom CEO
The start-up of the reactor at Unit 1 of Bangladesh’s Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, built with Russian participation, marks a major milestone for the project, Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev said.
The reactor has reached the minimum controllable power level (MCP), confirming that start-up was successful and a self-sustaining, controlled nuclear chain reaction is underway in its core, according to Rosatom.
“Reaching the minimum control level is an important milestone in the implementation of the Rooppur NPP Unit 1 project and a major achievement for the entire project team,” Likhachev said.
He added that, following the successful completion of this phase, the unit would be ready for power start-up and subsequent connection to Bangladesh’s electricity grid. Rosatom expects
this to happen by the end of November.
The company said all operations were carried out in accordance with design requirements and the start-up programme, under the supervision of specialists from the operating organisation, the general designer, the regulatory body and the Kurchatov Institute, the project’s scientific director.
Rosatom highlighted the plant’s role in strengthening Bangladesh’s energy security, developing national infrastructure and providing a reliable source of low-carbon electricity. It also credited the progress to the coordinated work of Russian and Bangladeshi specialists.
Located around 160 kilometres from Dhaka, Rooppur is Bangladesh’s first nuclear power plant. It is being built using a Russian design and will feature two VVER-1200 reactors with a combined capacity of 2,400 megawatts.
