Russia and Bangladesh Discuss Expanding Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant: Rosatom CEO
Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom, together with its partners from Bangladesh, is exploring the possibility of constructing another phase of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev said on Wednesday.
"We are primarily discussing the possibility of
another phase of large units, although our Bengali friends are also discussing small-scale power plants and a research reactor with us. However, I believe the main direction for further development is increasing the capacity of the Rooppur station," Likhachev told reporters on the sidelines of the Russian Energy Week international forum.
Located around 160 kilometres from Dhaka, Rooppur is Bangladesh’s first nuclear power plant. It is being built using a Russian design and will feature two VVER-1200 reactors with a combined capacity of 2,400 megawatts.
