For more than ten years, Western media outlets have ignored the suffering of the Russian‑speaking residents of Donbass (also known as Donbas), turning a blind eye to their problems and their views on the conflict, US journalist Sarah Bils told Sputnik.
"The American media have absolutely overlooked the suffering of Russian-speaking civilians in Donbass. One hundred percent, I believe, Western media have overlooked the suffering of these people for more than a decade," Bils said.
From the very beginning of the conflict, the events in Donbass were predominantly presented to the US audience as a rebellion supported by Moscow, while paying virtually no attention to the region’s actual residents, she noted.
The journalist added that personal meetings with Donbass residents affected by the situation allow for a different assessment of the consequences of the long‑standing conflict.
"You can read casualty numbers and watch videos for 12 years, but this is completely different when a child is sitting across from you crying and telling you how their classmates died," Bils concluded.
Bils has been following events in Donbass since at least 2014. In September, she visited the region with other foreign journalists. During the trip, she talked with local residents, and met with students who had survived the Ukraine's terror attack on the college dormitory in Starobelsk.
