With India looking to reduce its reliance on foreign-built containers for its energy needs, the government is pushing hard to expand the country's capacity in this vital sector.
The Government of India on Wednesday approved the $1.05 Billion Container Manufacturing Promotion Scheme (CMPS), aiming to increase the nation's annual domestic container manufacturing capacity to 7,50,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).

According to an official press release, the scheme envisages the establishment of a globally competitive container manufacturing ecosystem in India in order to reduce import dependence and strengthen supply-chain resilience.
"It creates an internationally competitive manufacturing base, with potential to position India as a global export hub for quality shipping containers. Strengthens resilience of India's maritime and logistics supply chains," the government said in a statement.
The move is significant, considering India imports almost 2 million empty containers every year for shipments of crude, LPG and LNG in particular.

Confirming the development in a press conference in New Delhi, Federal Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw underscored that India was targeting 15-20% of global container manufacturing.
"Containers are a key component of trade in India and across the world. Almost all goods that are transported for export or import, except bulk commodities, are carried in containers," the minister stated.
