Under the agreement, GRSE will construct five corvettes, while GSL will build the remaining three. The project marks a significant milestone in India’s indigenous warship design and shipbuilding capabilities. The Next-Generation Corvettes will be equipped with advanced missiles, weapons systems and sensor suites, enabling them to operate across air, surface and sub-surface domains.Their induction is expected to significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s ability to safeguard maritime trade routes, conduct anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, strengthen coastal defence, undertake littoral combat operations, and enhance maritime surveillance and presence. The project will also strengthen India's domestic shipbuilding ecosystem by promoting the use of Made-in-India materials and equipment, indigenous technologies, and local expertise, marking a major step towards achieving Aatmanirbharta in defence manufacturing.

India Signs $5.68 Billion Contracts to Build Eight Next-Generation Navy Corvettes
India’s Ministry of Defence on Monday signed contracts worth approximately $5.68 billion with Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) for the indigenous construction of eight warships for the Indian Navy.
Under the agreement, GRSE will construct five corvettes, while GSL will build the remaining three.
The Next-Generation Corvettes will be equipped with advanced missiles, weapons systems and sensor suites, enabling them to operate across air, surface and sub-surface domains.
Their induction is expected to significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s ability to safeguard maritime trade routes, conduct anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, strengthen coastal defence, undertake littoral combat operations, and enhance maritime surveillance and presence.
The project will also strengthen India's domestic shipbuilding ecosystem by promoting the use of Made-in-India materials and equipment, indigenous technologies, and local expertise, marking a major step towards achieving Aatmanirbharta in defence manufacturing.
