A top Daesh* commander was killed in a Taliban** special forces op on Monday night, a Taliban spokesman has revealed.

"Last night, during an operation in the Khairkhan district of Kabul city, two ISIS members were killed, one of them was an important official of the Khorasan branch of ISIS - Qari Fateh," spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid said in a statement on Tuesday.

According to the Taliban spokesperson, the killed militant - Qari Fateh - was the "intelligence and operations chief" of Daesh's Khorasan arm based in Afghanistan's Kunar province.
Mujahid said that the eliminated Daesh commander was responsible for numerous attacks on diplomatic missions and religious places in Afghanistan.

"Recent attacks on foreign diplomatic embassies, mosques, and other places in Kabul were carried out under his direct supervision," Mujahid added.

After Afghanistan's democratically elected government fell in 2021, Daesh has become the main security threat to the Taliban government, targeting state organizations and foreigners, including embassy staff and minority groups.
In December last year, the group claimed responsibility for attacking a Kabul hotel that left five Chinese citizens injured. The same month, the Pakistani Embassy came under fire from Daesh militants, with the Shehbaz Sharif government labeling it an attempt to "assassinate" the ambassador.
In January, Daesh said that its members carried out a suicide bombing in front of the headquarters of Afghanistan's Foreign Ministry, killing ten.
Moreover, the Taliban has also pointed fingers at Daesh for a suicide bombing in Kabul in September 2022 that left 54 dead.
*Daesh, also known as ISIS/IS/Islamic State is a terrorist organization banned in Russia and internationally by UN Security Council resolutions.
