The Delhi government is on high alert after the Yamuna River on Sunday crossed the danger mark once again.
According to reports, the river was flowing at 206.1 meters at 10 a.m. (IST) and is expected to rise to 206.7 meters by evening.
The water level of the river has increased since 200,000 cusecs of water was released from Hathnikund barrage in neighbouring Haryana state.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator and minister in the Delhi government Atishi Marlena said that the city government is monitoring the developments and is prepared to tackle any situation.
The AAP legislator said there might be flooding in some parts of the Yamuna Khadar area if the water level rises further.
However, she said that the government is fully prepared to carry out immediate evacuations in these vulnerable areas.
Meanwhile, relief camps have already been set up and regular announcements are being made in areas at risk of flooding.
While talking to the media, Atishi said: “The Revenue Department has taken extensive measures to tackle the situation effectively. Whether it's the Central district, Eastern District, or areas like Yamuna Bazar and Yamuna Khadar, we have made sufficient preparations to address any challenges that may arise”.
The water level of the river has been increasing as water is being continuously released from the Hathnikund barrage in Haryana amid heavy rainfall in the capital city.
Due to the unexpected increase in the water level, several areas and important roads in Delhi have witnessed a flood-like situation, as a result of which thousands of people have been displaced and heavy loss of property has been reported.
