Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Masud Bin Momen warned on Saturday that the South Asian nation could be destabilised if arson continues unabated in the run-up to the country's general election.
"Any de-stability will be disastrous for this huge population. Therefore, stability and democratic rule is a mandatory provision for our existence as a nation. Our constitution has very clear provisions for smooth democratic practices in the country. The National Election Commission a constitutional body to hold elections in the country is well in its business," Momen stated in his address to foreign Election Observers in the national capital Dhaka.
Momen's comments came hours after arsonists attacked a Dhaka-bound passenger train on Friday, killing five people.
It is worth noting that unrest in Bangladesh has been on the rise since the country's main opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), decided to boycott the general election.
The BNP's decision not to take part in the national elections came in the wake of the ruling Awami League's decision not to hand over power to a caretaker government before the citizens of the South Asian sovereign state cast their votes.
Instead of contesting the elections, the BNP has called for a 48-hour nationwide strike, demanding Hasina's resignation.
