India Aligns with Russia’s Vision of Multipolar World & Global South: Experts

Russian Deputy Chief of Mission in India Roman Babushkin stated on Friday that Russia aims to fortify BRICS-Plus as one of the primary organisations pushing the agenda of the Global South during its chairmanship of the grouping.

The Russian presidency, according to Babushkin, is intended to "strengthen the BRICS' global influence as one of the core organisations promoting the Global South agenda," during the discussion on "Emergence of BRICS-Plus and its trajectory" at the Institute of Social Sciences (ISS), New Delhi.

"The motto of the Russian presidency is strengthening multilateralism for equitable global development and security. Russia plans to hold more than 200 events structured within the three baskets—policy and security, economy and finance, culture and humanitarian contexts," he remarked.

“India appreciates Russia's willingness to assist the economic challenges faced by global south nations, such as climate finance shortages, increasing debt burdens, and insufficient funds for sustainable development” Ambassador Rajiv Bhatia, Distinguished Fellow at Gateway House, told Sputnik India.

The Ambassador stressed that “this aligns with India's concerns, and there is a notable alignment in perspectives on BRICS between New Delhi and Moscow could lead to substantial benefits for both countries.”

Russia's pursuit of its leadership in BRICS and the remarks made during India's G-20 presidency highlights a shared vision between India and Russia within the Global South, said retired Major-General Sanjeev Chowdhary, Director at the United Service Institute of India (USI) to Sputnik India.

"Both the BRICS framework and Indian Prime Minister Modi's emphasis align to promote multilateralism, strengthening global institutions, and ensuring representation for emerging economies such as India,” the General noted.

Turning to the BRICS nations, Chowdhary insisted that “the economic cooperation and development are now central themes echoing India's push for policies that foster economic growth in the global south. These initiatives focus on equitable representation, social and environmental sustainability, and building resilience against global challenges.”

“A potential shift in Russia's focus towards Asia holds the potential to significantly influence India and other South Asian countries, especially in the context of a multipolar world. This shift could lead to heightened diplomatic engagements, enabling India and its neighbours to diversify their alliances and forge stronger ties with various major powers”, he said.

The retired general pointed out that “enhanced relations with Russia could open up economic opportunities through collaborative efforts in trade, investment, energy, and technology, fostering economic growth and development in the region.”

“In addition, the closer cooperation in security and defence, including arms deals and joint military exercises, has the potential to bolster regional security,” Chowdhary noted.

Chowdhary argued that “India aligns with Russia’s vision for a multipolar world and a strengthened alliance with Russia could contribute to a more balanced and stable global order”.

The former ambassador also underlined the decades of close ties between the two nations.

“India, being a longstanding and reliable partner for Russia, holds particular significance in this context. There is a noticeable enthusiasm in India to further reinforce and enhance the strategic partnership with Russia,” Bhatia said.
