Top-run ISIS leader in India Haris Farooqi has been apprehended by the Special Task Force (STF) along with his associate in Assam's Dhubri district after crossing over from Bangladesh, Indian media reported on Thursday.
The criminals were arrested in the Dharmasala area based on a tip-off and taken to the STF office in Guwahati.
"They had furthered the cause of ISIS in India through conspiracies to carry out recruitment, terror funding and terror acts using IEDs at several places across India," police told local media.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) in New Delhi and the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) in Lucknow have reportedly opened numerous investigations against the two.
The STF Assam would further turn them over to the NIA so that additional legal action can be taken.
In an effort to combat the ISIS module in India, NIA conducted raids at 19 sites in four states in December of last year. Eight ISIS agents were detained by the NIA teams on charges of encouriging terror activities.
