India and Bangladesh Ink Border Security Agreement

India shares a 4,096-kilometre-long land border with Bangladesh and hence, having an effective mechanism for manning the frontier is crucial to prevent infiltration of illegal migrants from the neighbouring nation.

Border guarding forces of India and Bangladesh, namely the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), announced the signing of an agreement for better coordination and cooperation on Thursday.

"Special emphasis was given to focus issues, particularly insurgent activities, various trans-border crimes including smuggling of contraband items like psychotropic drugs and narcotic substances, Border violation, and pending infrastructural/developmental works, besides common Coordinated Border Management Plan (CBMP)," the BSF said in a statement.

The BSF and BGB also stressed the need to find viable solutions to issues of concern between the two sides.
Moreover, both forces vowed to resolve their differences through mutual trust to strengthen their bond of friendship, which began in 1971, when India assisted Bangladesh in its Liberation War against Pakistan.
Notably, the cooperation pact between the BSF and BGB came days after Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to New Delhi wherein she reiterated her commitment to having close ties with India.
"The visit was short but very fruitful. I think this visit will play a very pivotal role in strengthening the existing excellent relations between India and Bangladesh," Hasina said late last month after holding talks with the Indian leadership.
