US-Israel War on Iran: Cue For India in Drone Warfare

Iran's use of low-cost Shahed drones has significantly changed the dynamics of its conflict with the US and Israel, forcing other nations to take note of it and ramp up their drone warfare capabilities.

What Iran has demonstrated is that it is possible to stand against overwhelming hyperpower by using one's capabilities more intelligently and choosing precise targets, an aviation pundit has said.
"There are three factors that come into play. One, the ability to produce a large number of drones and missiles. Second, technology that gives significant accuracy. Third, survivability against the enemy's air defence systems, and success in penetrating them," retired Air Marshal M. Matheswaran told Sputnik India.
So, what Iran has also done very intelligently is to push their lower-grade drones and missiles in the initial stages to exhaust the adversary's air defence missile systems. Once interceptor numbers started coming down, it's not easy to replace them as they're very expensive and have a time-consuming production process, he added.

What's important here is that this has been built into Iranian strategy. So, it's an asymmetric war, where Iran is forcing the adversaries to look at the exorbitant cost that they are incurring in trying to subdue Iran, the military analyst reckoned.

"Iran is prepared for the next phase of its asymmetric strategy, which will be guerrilla warfare, should the Americans decide to put boots on the ground, which will turn out to be another Vietnam," Matheswaran asserted.

Earlier this week, the Indian Army rolled out six Shaurya Squadrons, its drone-powered tank regiments.

The Army's armoured corps is its offensive arm, and the drones will play a role both in terms of providing surveillance and targeting and other information apart from carrying out strikes on enemy assets, the former Indian Air Force (IAF) official noted.

Combining drones with manned and unmanned teams is now essential, a drone expert, retired Brigadier Anshuman Narang told Sputnik India, adding that the principle is that machines should take the first strike, highlighting the role of drones in minimizing human casualties.
In essence, all the dangerous, deceptive, high-risk tasks are to be carried out by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Narang stressed.

The Indian Army is aiming for 'one soldier one drone' and to attain that goal, a lot of induction is already underway, and across the board, there is a focused induction of drones in the 1.3 million force, he highlighted.
"The recent embedding of the Shaurya Squadrons in the Indian Army's tank regiments is primarily for facilitating the manoeuvre of armoured vehicles. Whatever could disrupt their advance, if enemy drones are in a position to strike them, these drones would eliminate that threat. Thus, these drones provide forward reconnaissance, facilitate multi-domain operations," Narang concluded.
