Bootleg Liquor Tragedy in Bihar: Death Toll Rises to 39, Reports Say
Several people have died in Saran district of Bihar state this week after consuming illegal liquor. Others were hospitalized in serious condition.
The death toll due to the consumption of bootleg liquor in the Saran district of India's Bihar state rose to 39 on Thursday morning, media reports suggest, citing official sources.
17 of them died on Wednesday after allegedly consuming the liquor the previous night.
The incident triggered a political slugfest in the state, with the local opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) attacking the ruling Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) led by State Chief Nitish Kumar over the incident.
The BJP also announced a massive protest to be held in Chhapra town, where the highest death toll was reported.
Stating that the ban on the sale of liquor in Bihar has failed, senior BJP politician and federal Minister Giriraj Singh requested Kumar to reconsider the prohibition policy.
“Every day people in Bihar are dying due to spurious liquor while Kumar remains obstinate about his policy which has failed. Crime is on the rise. Liquor has become like God which may not be visible but is present everywhere in the state,” he told media.
He also suggested that Kumar should convene an all-party meeting over the issue and take a decision accordingly.
Nitish Kumar Loses Temper
On Wednesday, Bihar state chief lost his cool following BJP lawmakers' uproar over alcohol-related deaths in the state legislature.
"What happened? Keep quiet. Get them out of the House," Kumar lashed out at BJP lawmakers, and even called all of them "drunkards."
Demanding anapology from Kumar, BJP lawmakers staged a walkout from the state assembly and staged a protest outside the assembly.
“The State Chief owes his current term in office to us (BJP) but he ditched us and joined those (RJD) he had been accusing of 'Jungle Raj'. In their company, he has picked up their ways, which is evident from the intimidating and insulting language he used against us on the floor of the House,” the Leader of Opposition in Bihar, Vijay Kumar Sinha, said.
Firing back, Bihar Deputy State Chief Tejashwi Yadav claimed that Bihar also
witnessed hooch deaths back when the BJP was in power.
In August 2016, Nitish Kumar introduced a law prohibiting the sale and consumption of alcohol in Bihar. Since then, Bihar has been known as a "dry state." Despite that, however, there have been numerous incidents in which people have died after consuming bad liquor.
