The Chaman-Spin Boldak border is one of the busiest transit points between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
At least one person was left dead and 15 others suffered injuries after the Taliban* guards at the Chaman-Spin Boldak border opened fire with heavy artillery at the Pakistani side on Thursday, as per officials.
Pakistan’s Frontier Corps (FC), in-charge of manning the Afghanistan border, returned fire, resulting in a heavy exchange at the border and the disruption of civilian and goods traffic, Pakistani officials told local media.
Officials said that the clashes erupted after the Taliban guards objected to the repairing of the fencing at the Durand Line that was being carried out by Pakistani sentries.
Local authorities in Chaman said that the border crossing has been evacuated and the injured have been moved to a nearby hospital.

What Is the Durand Line Dispute About?

The 2,670-km-long Durand Line between Afghanistan and Pakistan was drawn up by British colonialists in 1893. However, none of the Afghan governments have ever recognized the border.

The Taliban has consistently objected to the fencing works at the Durand Line, which are being carried out by Islamabad in order to reinforce their territorial claims.

The clashes are the second time since last weekend that Taliban and Pakistani border troops have clashed at the Chaman-Spin Boldak border. Seven people were left dead on the Pakistani side after the Taliban launched heavy artillery and mortar over the weekend.
A Taliban guard also died in Islamabad’s counter-offensive, according to reports.
At the time, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of Pakistan’s military, stated that the Pakistani troops gave a “befitting albeit measured response” against the “unprovoked aggression.”

Foreign States Backing Daesh in Afghanistan: Taliban
Earlier this month, Pakistan’s diplomatic mission in Kabul came under attack from Daesh** terrorists, in what has been described as an “assassination” attempt against Pakistan's Ambassador to Afghanistan, Ubaid-ur-Rehman Nizamani.
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, during a briefing on Thursday, said that the envoy has since been recalled and would only be sent back to Kabul after the Taliban issued assurances regarding his security.
The spokesperson also said that Islamabad was in touch with Kabul to investigate the border incident over the weekend.
Ties between Pakistan and the Taliban have been frayed in recent months over consistent tensions over the Durand Line as well as a rise in terrorist activity by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP)***, whose leadership is based in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province.
